From the Sewing Room

I recently had a rather large shopping accident at Fabric.com, and decided I needed to get sewing to help justify spending so much money.

I made Katie an Olivia pinafore from panda fabric, lined in a bamboo print.

I fussy cut the back to have the cute panda family visible.

I used plastic snaps instead of buttons.  Then I got really daring and used a striped knit to make the Olivia under dress.  No hood, since I didn't have enough fabric for it.

The sleeves are a little long for her, but otherwise I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Hannah got a new dress, too.

The sleeves and bottom band of the skirt are Chinese characters.

The bodice and skirt are Japanese kokeshi dolls.  I feel a little bit weird about mixing cultures like that, but maybe it's enough just to know that they're not the same?

I managed to drop off the Farmer's Market quilt I showed you recently for Project Linus (after it rode around in my van for over a week!).  I've started on 2 scrap quilts, and I went through a bucket of scraps, cutting out small and medium sized blocks and then setting the rest aside.  All those leftover scraps (4 mailing bags worth) went to a friend whose daughters have taken an interest in sewing.

Getting the scraps out and getting the dresses finished feels really good.  I hope to be more productive in the sewing room this year.

  1. I love your fabric choices. I've not shopped for fabric is so long I have no idea what's out there any more. Sad, huh?

I need to sew my youngest's summer wardrobe because I don't have summer stuff in size 5.

    1. The stripe knit for the under-dress was "stash" fabric from ages ago. In fact, I think Brianna may have had leggings from that print, lol.

I'll keep you in mind when I start pulling out summer stuff. Katie wore size 5 last year.

  2. I love your first line . . . about the shopping accident. :) Too funny!

But, oh, what wonderful items you've made. Those dresses are simply marvelous!!

My 7 year old is currently fascinated by all things Chinese because she's been reading Andrea Cheng's "The Year of . . ." books. If you haven't discovered them, perhaps your girls would like them. There's even one about adopting a baby from China.

    1. It's been a long time since I've bought fabric, and I went way overboard. I feel like I should get back in the sewing room and crank out multiple items to make up for it.

We have the first 3 Year of... books. Hannah got the 3rd one for CNY last week. :)
