A Sky Without Stars review & GIVEAWAY

I was pleased to receive for review the book A Sky Without Stars, by author Linda S. Clare.  It's part of the Quilts of Love series from Abingdon Press.  Since I love sewing and reading, the thought of combining the two made me smile.

This book is about Frankie, whose grandmother taught her to quilt, and her son, Harold, barely scraping by after the death of Harold's father.  They are Lakota Indians, who have left their home in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, to move to Arizona.  They are living near the reservation, but not on it, and they face a lot of suspicion from their white community.

This book is also about Nick, a "half breed" Lakota/white mixed man, who is between a rock and a hard place.  He works for Bureau of Indian Affairs, and he's supposed to convince the sheep herding Navajos to farm, despite the fact that the white men know there's not enough water for them to do so.  Talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place!

Set in the 1950s, it's a look back at prejudice and poverty during that time.  But the empathetic way the author portrays the Native American people, and the racism against mixed race people is relevant for today.  A friend of mine has told me, "My black friends think I'm too white, and my white friends think of me as black."  It's a thought provoking reminder of the way we try to put everyone into a box, instead of getting to know them first as people, reflections of God's creation, and then as people of a certain (or multiple) race(s).

Part of the story takes place at the Navajo fair.  I was reminded of the beautiful photos taken by fellow blogger and adoptive mama, Nancy, of Ordinary Miracles, so I asked if I could share this one with you.  It reminds me of Wanda's character.
