Our Chinese New Year Week

I love Chinese New Year.  Both because I love China, and sharing it's culture with my family, but also because it's a 15 day long holiday, and even I can get it together somewhere in that 2 week span.

I showed Hannah's wandering black line project last week without the Sharpie accent.  She used a large Sharpie to go over the black watercolor line, and I like the way it turned out much better.

Since this was the start of Chinese New Year, the kids drew dragon pictures.

We also made lanterns.  I love the way the gold Kwik Stix accent the top & bottom of the lanterns!

This is year of the rooster, so we did a rooster picture, using warm and cool colored watercolor pencils.

Jack's and Hannah's (after adding water) and Katie's.  Katie didn't really understand the concept of coloring the rooster in warm colors and the background in cool colors.

Panda Express gave Brianna a red envelope.  She was so happy!

Personally, I was more happy about not having to make dinner!

I know you're not supposed to give books for CNY in China, but to homeschoolers every holiday is a book giving holiday.  Katie got this one, Hannah got this one, and Jack got this one.  Hannah's is actually book 3 in a series.  She's already read the first two.

We've gotten 2 letters from Sam now.  Hannah and Katie made cards to send him for Valentine's Day.

Katie uses up a dot marker page that I printed for last CNY and never got around to using.

I discovered that you can put a hold on science kits through our local library, so I ordered up some material on birds, and we picked those (and several others, of course) up on Thursday.

I always love the drive home from the library because they're all quiet reading the new books.

We're still sick, which is no fun.  Brianna and Eli have gone back to school, and we're homeschooling, but everybody is coughing and miserable.  We had a massive downpour of rain this morning that really went with how everybody was feeling.  The weather is supposed to be gross all next week, but hopefully we'll start feeling better soon.

  1. My middle son still have a Chinese lantern hanging in his room that he made in Kindergarten and he's now in 5th grade. He loves learning about China and it's culture.
