One of the biggest treats for me about blogging is getting new books for the kids in the mail. It's so exciting to sit down and share a new book together. We got to review S is for Smiling Sunrise, by Vick Wadhwa. This charming little book is published by WordsBright. It is available in hardcover and Kindle editions.
This was a perfect book for four year old Katie, who is just learning the names of the letters of the alphabet. I could point to the letter and she'd either tell me it's name or say, "I don't know," and I'd tell her. Then I'd say, "A is for..." and she'd fill in the blank with a little help from the picture. "A is for Art!"
For example, neither of my two girls knew what an Infant was. Katie said, "I is for sleeping?" Hannah asked, "What is that?" I explained that infant is another word for baby.
S is for Smiling Sunrise has a teaching guide you can download, and there are free MP3 songs available to go along with it. We received the sing along songs on CD, which was nice for playing in the car.
Since our appointments at Shriners usually take about 2 hours, I brought along S is for Smiling Sunrise on our most recent visit to entertain Katie while we waited for her new leg to be adjusted. More than just an ABC book, we found there was plenty to talk about within the book, as I asked her questions like, "What else do you see in the picture? How many birds are there? Which flower is your favorite? What are those kids doing?" to really get her thinking about what she saw.
S is for Smiling Sunrise has a cover price of $16.95, and is currently selling on Amazon for $14.36. Quantity discounts are available from Pathway Book Service, details on the WordsBright website. You can connect with author Vick Wadhwa on Facebook.
