Field Trip Friday: Sacramento Zoo

We went to the zoo with a couple other families this week.

First, the obligatory, "Stare into the sun" photo.

The one with the red panda was a lot more smiley.

We love the giraffes, and the giant tortoise that lives between the observation deck and the giraffe pen.  Hannah took forever to spot the tortoise, and then said, "Aw!  What a cute little thing!"  Dude, that sucker was easily the size of a laundry basket.

The giraffe must have overheard her, eh?

Brianna brought a friend from school.  Just to induce palpitations, I texted this picture to my husband and asked, "Is it just me, or do they look like a family?"

Jack likes the big cats.  I like big cats, too.  Tigers are my favorite.

Lemur at the Sacramento Zoo.

Lemur at the Beijing Zoo last week.  It was fun to compare the two kinds.

See the continent outline on the sign in front of Hannah?  Remember how Katie recently learned the continents?  Well, the skill has totally transferred from the book to real life.  Every. Single. Animal.  Katie would exclaim, "Shebras live in AFRICA!  Wallbees live in AUSHTAILIA!"  It was cute.  For about the first 5 or so.

I've got about a dozen random facts about animals tucked away in my head that I trot out whenever we go to the zoo.  One is about the color of the flamingos.  If you don't know why they're pinkish orange, look it up, it's actually pretty interesting.  I also like to point out that their knees bend "backwards" from ours.

The zoo makes a great field trip for us this year, since we're studying animal science.  We'll probably go a couple more times with sketch pads and spend some time drawing the animals we're learning about, but this trip, it was fun to hang out with friends and enjoy the sunshine.

I'll be busting out our Field Trip Journal this morning so the kids can write about their experience.  It's always fun to see what they remember.  It's usually not what I would assume, you know?

    1. Yes! Even though our zoo is small, it still offers the opportunity to learn. Plus, getting out in the fresh air is always good. :)

    1. Oh, that's adorable. I know what you mean. I don't correct Katie's pronunciations. She's my last kid. I'll be sad when kolalas become koalas.

  3. My kids love visiting the zoo. I had to chuckle over the turtle. LOL My daughters favorite is the giraffe too. She has to stop and feed it everytime we are there. I never get tired of the zoo because you never know how the animals are going to act. I have been wanting them to take sketch pads with us but I forgot the last time we went.

    1. She says some of the silliest things! Now that we have a membership again, I'll be more inspired to take them. Science, art, nature study, PE on the playground... The zoo has it all.
