Math, How I Loathe Thee

This week, we're talking about numbers on the Virtual Curriculum Fair.  I always hated math when I was in school, ever since timed multiplication tables in Mrs. Perez's 3rd grade class.  I was the kid stuck on 3s when everyone else was doing 6s and 7s.

I've tried not to pass along my own biases to my kids, but none of them really enjoy math, either.  Some programs we've tried have been better than others, though.

online programs
CTC Math - Eli used this program here at home, and when he got to high school, he kept saying, "I already learned this."  I love the advantage that gave him, so Jack is using CTC this year.  Here's our more recent review.

Whether math is the subject your kids want to do first, or whether it's a necessary evil, it's nice to have many options to choose from and be able to get the best fit possible for your child.

  1. We are not huge math fans around here either.

    1. I love the way God gave us different strengths. It's probably good that we're not ALL artsy/creative or ALL analytical/scientific. Makes the world so much richer to have both. :)

  2. I despise upper math. Thank God for my husband!

    1. I've often said, "Go ask Daddy/sister/brother if they can help you with this." I don't want to have to re-learn it.

  3. I learned enough math to get my A's in school, and then promptly forgot most of it. My challenge right now is a kid who "gets" math, but "hates" it. *sigh*

    1. The hard part is answering the "when am I ever really going to use this?" question. Because the best answer I've been able to come up with so far is, "When you're homeschooling your kids," and they're not impressed with that one.

  4. I always enjoyed math - everything was like a fun game for me - and my husband has a math degree, so it will be interesting to see if our daughter is as excited about it as we are!

    1. That's awesome! Even if she doesn't enjoy it, at least you guys are well equipped to help her with it!

  5. We LOVE math...for advanced learners, there is Beast Academy from Art of Problem Solving and for all learners there's also the Life of Fred series by Stan Schmidt...these are often overlooked, but are two of our favs

  7. So much hating on math, lol! I think sometimes it's helpful to focus on what you can do with it and how that's helpful in life. My oldest, for instance, came to realize that if he wanted to be able to efficiently program computer games, he needed to learn trigonometry. That was a carrot he needed to get him to apply himself to algebra 2. ;)

    1. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that it's a bunch of creative homeschooling writers talking about math. We use the other side of our brains more.

  8. I always loved math but I must say that I am having a hard time finding a math program that my two older boys can enjoy and really engage with for middle school math... so now I am loathing math!

    1. There's still a lingering sense of shame when I remember it. So I totally understand when my kids say, "I hate times tables!"
