Who knew boots could be romantic?? I just finished reading Claiming Mariah, by Pam Hillman. This was a sweet, wholesome read. I knew I was going to enjoy it when I read the dedication. Trust me, it's a good one.
The premise of the story is: Mariah is barely holding the ranch together after the death of her father. She's taking care of her grandmother and supporting her sister's education at a special school for the blind. Out of nowhere, Slade shows up with papers showing that the gold claim her father's money came from belonged to his father, and the ranch is ill-gotten gains that should rightfully belong to him!
With nowhere to go, she ends up staying on as Slade's housekeeper until his mother can travel to their new home. You can imagine how she feels about that.
The character Mariah is believable and endearing. She does an admirable job of holding her temper in lousy circumstances, and I was particularly touched by her introspective ponderings when she wondered if she was upset with Slade because he was making the ranch flourish, when she had been unable to do so.
I don't know if there's a sequel planned or not, but I'd love to see Mariah's sister come home and start hanging out with Slade's brother, Buck, who has his own cross to bear.
Even though you know it's all going to work out in the end, Claiming Mariah is suspenseful enough to make it hard to put this book down.
