Next School Year: What's The Plan?

I've mentioned before that our education motto is:  Education is a year by year, child by child decision.  Well, we've decided!  Read on to find out who goes where...

Okay, for those who are new to the blog, I'll lay out who is where currently.  Sam goes to a private high school.  Brianna, Eli, and Jack, are homeschooled.  Hannah goes to the public school in our neighborhood.  Katie and Luke pretty much hang out and go with the flow.

Now for next year.  Samuel will stay where he's at.  Next year will be his junior year.  Brianna will join Sam at the same private high school as a freshman.  This will be her first classroom school experience since kindergarten, so I expect it will be a bit of a transition for her.

Eli and Jack will stay home with me.  We are looking forward to continuing our chronological history of the world with Rome to the Reformation.  More details about our curriculum choices to come soon.

Hannah will stay at the school she is in for second grade.  I was hoping she would be coming home to join the boys and I, but Paul feels that given she's thriving where she's at, and that we've got a lot on our plates right now, she should stay put.  I'm sad, but I know he's right.  She's very social, and loves going to school.  And I struggle with patience when I work with her on homework, so I can tell having her in our class here would be a challenge at times.

Katie, who will turn 4 in September, will be at home.  I'm not sure how much formal "schooling" she'll get, but hopefully we can include her in some of our activities and projects, and I would like to plan some "tot trays" for her, but I'm not making any promises.

While we haven't had the official IEP meeting yet, we have had Luke's "transition" meeting.  When he turns 3 this summer, he changes from an Early Intervention client to a student of the school district.  What I believe will happen with Luke and school is not set in stone yet, but it looks like he will ride the bus from our house to a mod/severe special needs contained classroom at a school a few miles away.  This is why he's getting a wheelchair.  His physical therapist calls it a "travel chair."  Basically, it's to get him from our doorstep to the bus, and from the bus to the classroom and back.  Luke's currently has 4 therapists.  Once school starts, he will receive all his therapies AT SCHOOL, which I'm super excited about.

I haven't been down to just 2 official homeschool students in many years.  Of course, in addition to Eli and Jack, I'll have Katie at home as a preschooler, and Hannah is off track for a month at a time 3 times during the school year, so it's not just two students, really.  But it will be a huge break from 3 students AND two littles and a sometimes off track first grader.  On the other hand, instead of juggling 2 schools and homeschooling, I will be juggling 3 schools and homeschooling.  I have no idea how the drop off and pick up schedule is going to work out yet, since an adult has to be present for Luke to be dropped off.  Next year will be interesting!

What's your plan for school next year?  Private school?  Public school?  Homeschool?  --Or are you crazy like me, and doing some combination thereof?

    1. We try to. I've always cautioned moms to say, "We're homeschooling," rather than "We're homeschoolers." It's a small matter of semantics, but if, for some reason, they decide to use a classroom school setting for their child, it's less of an identity issue/personal failure thing. The year by year, child by child decision has served us well for many years now.
