Clubfoot Basics: Life with a cast

BATHING

Most of the time, the cast is no problem.
Every once in a while, having a big, clonky, angled appendage is an issue.  Not being able to get the bulky thing wet is more of an issue.

Brianna snapped some pictures last time I washed Katie's hair, and they made me laugh, so I thought I would share them.

Katie loves the water, and having me stick her in, head first, surprisingly doesn't bother her a bit.  This is actually going to be Luke's bath water when I'm done doing her hair.  Please don't think I'd waste all this water just to do her head.

Once her hair is wet, we add shampoo.

And make crazy hair sculptures, of course.

Before you know it, it's time for the rinse cycle.  Again, most kids would be screaming bloody murder, but Katie doesn't mind.  I also flip her over and use a cup to pour water over her neck.  Amazing how little kids get "toe jam of the neck."

Perfect!  One beautiful girl with clean hair AND a dry cast.

  1. Considering Jack screams bloody murder anytime I so much as get him NEAR water, even right side up, I'm JEALOUS!

    1. LOL! You could show him these pictures and explain that he's got it better than he realizes. ;)

  2. I was searching info and ideas ob club foot babies. My son will be 6 weeks this friday and we just fixed with cast number 4. We are now on the braces and he absolutely hates it. Every time he moves his legs and feet, he screams bloody murder. It breaks my heart. I see your little one still has casts and I sincerely hope things go better if she has to have the braces.

    1. Thank you, Stacey. Katie's case is a little different, since she doesn't have a foot on her other leg, so she can't do boots and bar bracing, since there's nothing to attach to. She will probably have an AFO instead. I imagine the bar brace to be quite a nightmare. Have you seen this? A friend linked it to me. Looks like it could be more comfy for sleeping. http://www.dobbsbrace.com/ Good luck with your little guy!
