One Way Love - review and GIVEAWAY
I was given the opportunity to review the book One Way Love, by Tullian Tchividjian, who is the grandson of Billy Graham.
This book captivated me from the introduction, when it talked about how our focus has become more about what we are doing for God, rather than what God has done for us. That struck a chord with me, because I've seen adoption blogs where the focus is, "Look how great we are for taking in this poor orphan for God!" Not many of them, thankfully, but a few.
The author goes on to define grace, and talk about how foreign a concept it is to most of us, and how uncomfortable it makes us. Grace doesn't require anything on our part. Wow, that's a hard one for me. I struggle with the idea that God loves me just the way I am. I always feel not good enough. Guess what? I'll never be good enough.
It's interesting to read the parable of the prodigal son in this light. To see the unconditional grace that the father shows. And to read the author's personal stories of experiences with Law and Grace personified by others.
This book touched me. I am still processing much of what I read. My own parenting was largely law based for many years. As the children have gotten older, and perhaps even more as I have gotten older, I have lightened up a little. I am learning how to give grace. Now I'm being challenged to learn how to receive grace.
To see if Pastor Tullian is coming to a city near you, check out The Gospel Tour, where he will be speaking with author Matt Chandler.

ReplyDeleteI love to read, too. :)
DeleteI lean more on Grace. With my brother and I being adopted when have always heard my parents tell us how grateful the God blessed them with two children. I always thank the Lord for blessing me with two wonderful parents, my father passed away suddenly last year but will always be in my heart!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry for your loss! I'm glad you have wonderful memories of him.
DeleteI am trying to be more gracious - showing the grace that I seek to others. I do great with some people but I have difficulty with others.
ReplyDeleteIsn't that the truth? Some people are just harder to like than others.
