People Keys

As part of The Schoolhouse Review Crew, I was selected to review the DISC Career Style Report for People Keys.  This assessment is designed for ages 13 and up.

I asked Samuel to take the assessment for me.  Sam is 15, and wants to enlist in the military after high school.  He didn't think he needed career guidance, but I explained that many of the jobs in his profile can be done IN the military.  "You can be a military driver.  You can be a military instructor.  You can be a military translator."

Suddenly, that made more sense to him, and he could see the value in learning what specific roles within the military he might be best suited for.  As a teen boy who is not terribly deep and introspective in personality, he had to ask me a few times, "Am I more this or this?"  He thought girls might be better at this sort of test than boys.

He finished the test in about 20 minutes, and the results are available instantly.  Sam scored highest in the I and S styles, so I printed the job recommendations for those styles and asked him to read them over and especially take note of any professions that were suggested for both styles.

Not only was this experience vocabulary enriching for him, ("Mom, what's a sommelier?") but it caused him to consider fields that he hadn't thought about before.  As an incoming sophomore, it's time for him to start thinking about these things, and I value the experience taking this test has given him.

If you have a high schooler who hasn't selected a job field yet, I would recommend this test as a springboard to career exploration.  At $32, it is a much more reasonable alternative than putting a child through a year (or more!) of college, only to have them discover they don't really like their chosen path after all.  While taking a career assessment does not eliminate the possibility of a child changing their mind later, it does at least give them a direction to start out in that is specifically suited to their strengths and likes.

People Keys also offers other assessments, such as personality tests, Children's profiles, and more.  Other Crew Members reviewed different products.  Click here to read more reviews:

  1. I recently took a similar test to this, just to test a computer system for the developers. I found out that I am incredibly unsuited towards what my first college major was.

No surprise at all that I wasted my first semester in college and had to add another to the back end...

  2. That is cool. I should have paid more attention to those surveys when I was a kid. I got a degree in Construction Management and now I am in Sales and Marketing. Oh well.
