The one downside of reviewing books is being introduced to authors and series' that you just have to read more of!
Kids books:
I
reviewed Badge of Honor
last summer, and my kids enjoyed it so much that I surprised them with
Tunnel of Gold
, which I
mentioned here. This, of course, led to us getting
Canyon of Danger
, which we just finished, and now we are looking forward to
River of Peril
, which comes out next month.
A blog I follow mentioned
Travels with Gannon and Wyatt: Egypt
, and since we'd been studying so much about Egypt this year, and it was geared toward Jack & Eli's age group, I decided to get both the Egypt book and the
Botswana
one, too. Eli read them and enjoyed them, and I'm currently reading Botswana aloud to Jack. It's pretty good! I even found a
handwriting page about African Animals, and had Jack trace the words while I was reading to him one night. Don't tell Eli, because I want to read it aloud, but I just got
Great Bear Rainforest
, the next book in the series.
I am going to be reviewing a book selection service soon, and while I was browsing their site I came across a series I think Hannah is
almost ready for.
The Year of the Baby
,
The Year of the Fortune Cookie
, and
The Year of the Book
look really cute. It's nice to be able to find books with Asian characters for her. They're recommended for ages 6-9, so I think I'll get them for Hannah's birthday (she'll be 7) in April and see what she thinks of them.
Zulily.com recently had a book that looked interersting. I picked up
China - Everything You Ever Wanted to Know
and it's chock full of tidbit sized facts in a fun to read presentation. It's part of a series that includes other countries and cities. I think we might need the Rome one next year!
Mama books:
I used my Tyndale points to get
It Happens Every Spring
. If you've heard of Gary Chapman, you probably think of
The 5 Love Languages
. Yeah, same guy. This book was really good, in a wholesome way. I wouldn't have a problem with Brianna coming across it and reading it, like I would some of the books I've read recently. I don't think she's really ready for it yet; it's mostly about married couples, but there's nothing objectionable in it. One of the things in it that struck me was that one of the characters is a homeless developmentally delayed adult. It made me think about what happens to kids like Luke when they're grown. Especially ones who, for whatever reason, don't have a family.
I have a couple of great books coming up for review soon, but I won't spoil them for you. Let's just say, I've been reading and enjoying!
Curriculum:
I won
Asia: Its People and History
from a blog giveaway. I'm looking forward to getting it and seeing what it says about China.
How about you? What are you reading these days? Any great books I should know about?

Thanks for clicking for us!
You've just added more books to my list now too :) As if my list isn't already long enough! ;) I've read Asia: It's People and History and I think you will really enjoy it! Congratulations on winning the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I can't wait to see it! :)
DeleteAs part of our kindy curriculum "Around the World," we have or are going to be reading the following: (Amazon book list, though we ordered through Shecki's link so she got credit!) http://astore.amazon.com/mamrex-20
ReplyDeleteOkay, 1) you rock. Thank you for using my link! 2) I have super fond memories of our around the world studies last year. You must be having a blast. 3) Great books there! We LOVE Carole Marsh! Her chapter books, her state coloring books, all kinds of good stuff. :D
DeleteI like seeing what other families are reading. We have a set list that the children work their way through... some of these look interesting!
ReplyDeleteI've never followed a list; how do you like it? There are "book basket" recommendations with our curriculum, but we do the required reading and the kids choose their own leisure reading.
