The Homemaker's Mentor CD Review

Wow!  What a treasure trove of information!  The Homemaker's Mentor CD is a whopping 110 pdf files!  This amazing resource contains household tips, recipes, how-tos, ebooks, and more.

Somewhere along the way, "homemaking" has gotten lost.  So much of the information included in this CD used to be common knowledge in our grandmothers' time, but is all new to those of us who grew up with working moms and microwave dinners.

As we come back to a more home-based life, it can be frustrating to not know how to be a good homemaker.  This CD not only gives the tools to learn some traditional skills, it also inspires you to try new things you hadn't even thought of trying before.  We will be using this CD for the rest of this school year (and likely as reference for years to come).

One of the first things I checked out on the CD was the sewing section, of course.  One of the files was on recycling a dress into a skirt.  Well, it just so happened that I had a dress I was given that I'd never worn, as I didn't have just the right color tank to wear underneath it.  Thanks to the tutorial, I now have a new skirt!

Most of the material made great projects for Brianna and I to do together, or for Brianna to do on her own.  Since Brianna is the official yarnie in our household, I had her do the Knitting With Frames project.

While she's not finished with it yet, you can see it's turning into a nice scarf.

As we've been trying to transition to a healthier, more natural life, I was very interested in the 2 lessons on making herbal remedies.  I had no idea that making infusions, decoctions, and even tinctures was so simple!

It was interesting to read about the proper care of cast iron pots & pans.  Paul has always been a little obsessive about our iron pans, and this really explained the reasoning and procedures well.

And while we're in the kitchen, let me just mention all the mouth watering recipes!  We have several new ingredients on this week's shopping list, as we get ready to try a couple.  I've been given permission to share this recipe we tried with you:

Best Peanut Butter Cookies
1 cup [2 cups] shortening
1 cup [2 cups] white sugar
3/4 cup [1 1/2 cups] brown sugar
1 tsp. [2 tsp.] vanilla flavoring
1 dash [1/4 tsp.] salt
2 [4] eggs
1 cup [2 cups] peanut butter - chunky or creamy
2 cups [4 cups] unbleached all-purpose flour
1 cup [2 cups] whole wheat flour
2 tsp. [4 tsp.] baking soda

Cream together all ingredients but the flour and soda. Then add in flour and soda and incorporate with a stiff spoon or clean hands until all ingredients are well combined.

Form round balls from the cookie dough or use a scoop to make rounds on a lightly greased baking sheet. Press a table fork to make line indentions and to slightly flatten the cookies. Make sure there is at least 1” between cookies on the sheet to allow for spreading while baking.

Bake at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes.

Remove from baking sheet after 10 minutes and cool on wire racks.

*Use the ingredient amounts in brackets if you want to double the recipe for lots and lots of cookies!

I love that the recipe is simple enough for Brianna to make by herself.  Brianna was surprised when she saw wheat flour on the list.  We keep both wheat and white flours on hand, and are trying to use a combination whenever possible (although I've discovered I much prefer white waffles).

You can get this amazing CD, which normally retails for $47 for only $37 with FREE shipping from now until October 18.
